More than $1 billion will be injected into Region Two’s economy through the distribution of the Because We Care Cash Grant, PPP Member of Parliament Sonia Latchman said.

Around 1,899 private and public school pupils and students across the region were registered on Monday to benefit from the government’s $85,000-per-student grant programme, with more than 2,000 expected to benefit by today.

Regional Education Officer Shondelle Hercules said 1,899 envelopes were being distributed through the Bethany Primary School and Suddie Primary School centres, serving parents and guardians from surrounding communities.

The exercise began on Monday despite adverse weather, with Deputy Chief Education Officer (Technical) Dr Ritesh Tularam overseeing operations in the region. Latchman also visited the distribution sites to monitor the process.

Tularam described the first day as smooth and well-organised, crediting coordination between education officers, school staff and volunteers. He urged parents and guardians to keep to their scheduled distribution times to avoid delays.

The grant is intended to ease the cost of back-to-school preparations and support access to education for children in the region.

Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative. Vedo Stoll, of Pomona, said the support would help with school-related expenses, while Melany Fredericks, of Bethany, said it would significantly benefit her children. Devon Tang, of Supenaam, said the grant would help meet essential educational needs.
