The Government is moving to strengthen teacher training at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), as it seeks to maintain education standards and build on improvements in the recent secondary school examination performance.
Education Minister Sonia Parag met with CPCE Director Dr. Tamashwar Budhoo, Vice Principal Tamsin Henry Granville and senior staff on Saturday to discuss strengthening the College’s training programmes.
The discussions focused on updating the curriculum, maintaining high standards in teacher preparation and increasing the number of trained educators entering classrooms across the country.
The move comes as Guyana records notable gains in this year’s CSEC results, with more students achieving high grades across a wider range of subjects.
The Minister has noted that targeted government interventions have already provided gains in learning outcomes, including initiatives to strengthen mathematics and other key subject areas.
With a new batch of teachers preparing to begin training, the Ministry says CPCE must continue to respond to the changing needs of the education sector and ensure graduates are classroom-ready.
The meeting was also attended by Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain.
