The Guyana-Suriname ferry service has been temporarily suspended due to technical issues aboard the M.V. Canawaima, leaving passengers travelling between the two countries facing uncertainty over their onward journeys.
The Canawaima Management Company confirmed the suspension in a public notice issued Saturday, August 22.
“Service has been temporarily suspended due to technical issues on board the MV. Canawaima,” the notice stated.
Management said it is working to resolve the issues “at the soonest possible time” and that the public will be notified when the ferry is ready to resume service.
The suspension has already affected passengers at the Moleson Creek ferry terminal in Region Six, with some travellers seeking alternative arrangements to cross the Corentyne River and continue to Suriname.
The ferry’s suspension comes amid questions about its technical condition and regulatory requirements. A technical assessment dated August 21 proposed repairs and rehabilitation aimed at extending the vessel’s service life.
However, the official Canawaima notice makes clear that the ferry service remains suspended until the technical issues are addressed.
Management has apologised for the inconvenience and directed the public to contact the Canawaima Ferry Service for additional information.
