Rainbow colours were visible in Georgetown on Saturday as the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination wrapped up Guyana Pride Festival 2026 with its annual pride parade through the city.
Participants and supporters revelled along the route from Burnham Court grounds to Cuffy Square in recognition of the rights of LGBTQ+ persons, as pride month drew to a close.
Guyana has observed pride month for more than a decade, and despite significant pushback from religious groups and other quarters, advocates say substantial progress has been made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights in the country.
The community said it continues to raise awareness and advocate for inclusivity and equal rights, even as it faces opposition from some members of the public. Saturday’s parade drew counter-protesters carrying bibles and loudspeakers, who followed the procession urging participants to repent.
Pride month typically involves a week of activities including the raising of the pride flag, fairs, expos, community outreaches and the parade.
