Guyana Water Inc. is urging citizens to sign up for its Household Sanitation Improvement Project, warning that pit latrines pose a danger to vulnerable water sources across the country.
The state water company is offering free replacement of pit latrines with modern flushable toilets equipped with septic tank systems, with more than 800 households already benefiting from the ongoing programme.
Communications Manager Travis Bruce told state television that the programme aims to replace 1,500 pit latrines with modern sanitation facilities by the end of 2026, with Phase Two set to expand into hinterland and riverine areas.
Bruce said GWI is increasingly tapping into underground and surface water sources as it works to deliver on the government’s promise of potable water to every home, and that toilet replacements form part of broader efforts to reduce untreated human waste entering the water system.
Citizens wishing to have their toilets upgraded can visit the company or apply through its online services, including its social media pages, email at HSIP@guyanawaterinc.com, or via a form available on the GWI website.
