Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving the national team camp following a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus, BBC Sport reported.
The federation imposed the suspension on October 9 and opened disciplinary proceedings, marking the case as urgent.
The 41-year-old left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on September 30, three days after remaining an unused substitute against Norway. His departure came before the October 1 Nations League match against Denmark.
Ronaldo said Jesus had agreed to manage his playing time but subsequently told him he would play for 30 minutes against Norway. He warmed up during the match but was not brought on. Jesus denied making such an agreement.
In a statement on October 6, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates for leaving camp and said he would accept any punishment. He also indicated that he would remain available for selection after serving a suspension, provided he was fit and playing for his club.
Portugal continued to win during his absence, securing a Nations League quarter-final place. Jesus and federation president Pedro Proença have indicated that the door remains open for Ronaldo to return.
Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, both men’s international records, and helped the country win the 2016 European Championship and two Nations League titles. His next appearance now rests on the disciplinary process and a return to the squad.
