A decade after appealing to now-President Irfaan Ali for a house lot, 75-year-old Abdool Nazir has received a home built through the Men on Mission initiative.
Nazir and his common-law partner, Zanita Persaud, 59, received the house in Great Diamond on Friday, after living at a relative’s home.
Labour Minister Keoma Griffith led the handover ceremony, held as part of the initiative’s fourth anniversary activities.
Nazir first sought Ali’s help during an outreach event, where he shared his circumstances and asked for assistance obtaining a house lot. He later received the land, and Men on Mission subsequently constructed the home.
The couple’s need for their own accommodation came alongside health challenges. In 2017, Nazir was hospitalised with serious kidney complications that affected his mobility and left him bedridden for a period.
Persaud continues to care for him daily. The handover gives the couple a home of their own after relying on relatives for accommodation.
