Thirty-year-old labourer Steve McAlmont of Number 5 Village, West Coast Berbice, has been identified as the pedestrian killed in Saturday’s accident on Edderton Public Road.
The man was reportedly struck by a motor lorry while standing near the corner of the road.
Speaking with Ignite News, McAlmont’s brother, Tony Khan, said he was at work in Georgetown when he received a call about the tragedy.
“I was in Georgetown working when I received the phone call from my cousin and neighbour. Them said that my brother just got knocked down and he passed away,” Khan recalled.
He said, based on the information he received, his brother had gone to a nearby shop and was standing near the roadway after leaving the establishment.
“He stand up near the road corner, with an umbrella cover, and he make one step with his foot, and shortly after that they said they hear ‘blam,’ and that was all. By the time they looked, they see the body on the ground.”
Khan said his brother had been living with their father in recent times. McAlmont was previously a member of the Guyana Defence Force before leaving the army and working in other areas.
The lorry driver was reportedly taken into police custody as investigations into the accident continue.
