Suriname’s Maritime Authority (MAS) has turned down a Guyanese proposal for an alternative vessel to operate the Guyana-Suriname ferry route, the Government of Guyana said, even as it pushes another alternative and continues engagements with MAS to resume the current service on a short-term basis.
In a statement, the Government said it is aware of public concerns over the suspension of the MV Canawaima ferry service, noting that officials have been in daily contact with their Surinamese counterparts since the suspension began to resolve the issue.
Responsibility for maintenance and drydocking of the vessel falls under Suriname. The Government said two technical inspections were carried out in recent days by maritime experts from both countries, who concluded the vessel can remain in operation until it goes into drydock within the next three months.
Despite these assurances, provided in writing, MAS insisted that certain matters that would have been addressed during drydocking should be undertaken immediately, the Government said.
The Government said it supports safe travel for the public and maintains that safety is a priority, while acknowledging the inconvenience the situation is causing users of the service.
Immigration service is still being provided to persons travelling to Suriname by small boats, who are required to report to the immigration office at the Moleson Creek Terminal upon departure, and to the Immigration Office in New Nickerie upon arrival in Suriname. When departing Suriname, persons must report to the respective immigration offices.
The Government said everything possible is being done to resume the service, and thanked the public for their patience and understanding.
