Two men died and several others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in to a wake house overturned along the Eversham Corentyne Public Road, Berbice, on Monday, relatives said.
Dead are 19-year-old Admeer Isaiah Pooran and 26-year-old Daniel Singh, both of Murphy Dam, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:30am and involved motorcar PZZ 9131. Region Six Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus, confirmed that two persons were pronounced dead after being taken to the No. 75 Public Hospital. The other occupants of the vehicle were also rushed to the hospital for treatment.
One of the occupants was reportedly flung several feet from the vehicle and landed on the roadway following the crash.
Daniel’s aunt, Karen Singh, said her nephew was seated in the front passenger seat while Pooran was driving. She said the group had attended a small gathering before setting off.
“It’s a weekend. That was yesterday. They had them little friendly thing out by the street. And they just take a white wagon and they just drive down over that side,” she said.
“They said their friend said that they were going to a wake house. And the tire just blew off. That’s where they toppled over,” she recounted.
Singh said Daniel suffered a fractured skull and internal bleeding. She described her nephew as a kind and loving young man who was always willing to help others.
“He’s good. He’s very good. He’s kind, he’s soft-hearted. He’s so loving. Anything you ask of him, he’s just there. He’s just there to help out. He helps a lot,” she said, breaking down.
Daniel was one of four siblings, with two brothers and a sister.
Pooran’s mother, Devi Anthony, said she last spoke with her son on Saturday and was devastated when she received word that he had been involved in an accident. She said she saw her son lying in the vehicle when she arrived at the hospital.
“My daughter-in-law call me and tell me that Isaiah reached in an accident. When me get the news, me call my husband and we take a taxi and go straight to the hospital,” she recalled.
“Me see my son lay down in the bus, he and the other boy. He head have a big hole on the side, and his face is full with blood, and the blood running out he mouth,” she said, struggling to hold back tears.
Anthony said she remains unaware of what led to the accident or where her son was travelling to or from at the time.
“I can’t say. My son is a good person. Never bad to nobody and fight,” she said.
Pooran’s sudden death has left behind his wife, child and other grieving relatives.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
