The Government has unveiled plans to transform Charity’s waterfront into a modern, attractive and people-friendly space as part of its Model Village Initiative.
The proposed development was among the key features presented to residents during a public consultation at the Charity Secondary School, attended by President Dr Irfaan Ali.
The plan aims to turn the waterfront into an organised recreational and commercial space while strengthening Charity’s identity as a river gateway for communities along the Pomeroon River.
A major component is the introduction of organised boat mooring, with dedicated berths for small boats to provide safer, more efficient docking. The waterfront would also benefit from enhanced lighting, a well-lit promenade, improved pedestrian walkways, landscaping, planters and waterfront railings, creating community spaces where residents and visitors can gather and relax.
Tree planting and landscaping are planned to provide shade and contribute to a cooler, healthier environment, while upgraded drainage, roads and supporting infrastructure form part of the wider development package.
Charity’s location near the mouth of the Pomeroon River has historically made it an important centre for transportation, agriculture, fishing and commerce, with the Charity Market remaining a major hub for farmers, fisherfolk, vendors and entrepreneurs.
The proposed Model Community Development Area covers approximately 271 acres and includes roads, public facilities, businesses, schools, places of worship and other community infrastructure.
During the consultation, residents also received information on proposed road improvements, drainage, culverts, property access and road reserves, with maps and concept designs presented to illustrate how sections of Charity could look following the proposed works.
