Sawmills in Linden will be taken off the electricity grid until demand normalises, as part of efforts to restore power to the community following frequent unscheduled outages, the Linden Electricity Company Inc. (LECI) said on Tuesday.
In a notice, LECI said the latest outage occurred after an engine trip at Bosai Guyana Minerals Inc., with the situation compounded by community peak demand exceeding the 14-plus megawatts allocated to Linden under a power purchase agreement involving the Government of Guyana, Bosai and LECI.
The company did not indicate how long the removal of sawmills from the grid would remain in effect.
Residents across Linden have been experiencing frequent, and in many cases daily, unscheduled interruptions to their electricity supply, affecting households and businesses.
LECI did not say whether additional generation capacity is being considered to address the demand issue, but appealed to customers for their understanding and cooperation while measures are taken to stabilise supply.
