The Guyana Fire Service has appealed to citizens to stop storing fuel in improper containers, warning that the practice poses serious fire and explosion risks.
The agency said the use of drink bottles, glass containers and other non-approved vessels could lead to leaks, ruptures and ignition, potentially causing injuries, property damage or loss of life.
It advised residents to store fuel only in approved metal safety cans or certified plastic containers, and to keep quantities for domestic use below five gallons (about 20 litres) unless official permission is granted.
Fuel should be kept in cool, well-ventilated areas away from heat sources and not stored inside homes or near exits, the Fire Service said.
It added that persons storing larger quantities must apply to the Fire Prevention Department and undergo inspection, with non-compliance subject to penalties under the Fire Prevention Act.
In the event of a fire, the public should evacuate immediately and call 912, the agency said.
