Pomeroon-born World War veteran Franklyn Courtman turns 100

Pomeroon-born World War vetera Franklyn Courtman

Franklyn Courtman, a proud son of the Pomeroon, has reached an extraordinary milestone—celebrating his 100th birthday as one of Guyana’s last surviving World War II veterans.

Now residing in Onderneeming, Courtman’s life is a remarkable story of courage, sacrifice and national pride. He was among approximately 260 brave Guyanese who volunteered to serve during World War II, joining the South Caribbean Force in defence of freedom.

His service took him far beyond Guyana’s shores, as he journeyed to places such as Italy and Egypt—lands deeply impacted by the war—where he played his part in the global fight for peace and liberation.

Today, as he celebrates a full century of life, Franklyn Courtman stands as a living symbol of resilience and history. His legacy is not only one of military service, but also one of inspiration for generations of Guyanese to come.

His birthday was celebrated by his family, the Regional Democratic Council and members of the Defence Force. Hampers were presented to him by the Region Two RDC.
