Guyana finishes CARIFTA Games with six medals

Guyana concluded the 2026 CARIFTA Games with six medals as the event ended on Monday in Grenada.
The country secured four gold medals through Tiana Springer in the girls’ under-20 400 metres, Malachi Austin in the boys’ under-20 400 metres, Olivia Solomon in the girls’ under-17 800 metres, and the mixed 4×400 metres relay team.

Jermaine Shepherd earned silver in the boys’ under-17 1500 metres, while Javon Roberts claimed bronze in the boys’ under-20 1500 metres.

Guyana’s under-20 4×100 metres team, which had been tipped to medal, finished fifth in the final with a time of 40.91 seconds.
The quartet of Gordon Thompson, Skylar Charles, Dequan Farrell and Onesi Dunn said they were disappointed with the result despite entering the race as medal contenders.

“We are very disappointed in our performance, but it is a big stage and we will be back,” Thompson said.
Charles also expressed frustration, saying the team would regroup and improve ahead of future competitions.

Farrell, however, struck a more measured tone, noting that the team had improved from the previous year.
“We are disappointed, but last year we did not reach the final, so this is progress. Next year we will come back better and more disciplined, and we expect to win a medal,” he said.

Dunn echoed similar sentiments, expressing confidence in a stronger showing at next year’s games.
The CARIFTA team is expected to return to Guyana later this week.
