The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) kicked off its kids’ programme over the weekend, with the main camp being held at the National Park rugby field.
Newly appointed GRFU President, Ryan Gonsalves, highlighted the need for such a programme for the sport.
“The programme started yesterday (Friday) at the Parade Ground and continued today (Saturday) at the National Park. That is because we wanted to invite parents and children to come to the park on the weekend, and we are happy with the numbers we have. We are hoping to improve every week,” Gonsalves stated.
Additionally, Gonsalves noted what the programme entails for the children, pointing out that the experience of former players within the programme is a major boost for the young ruggers.
“We have coaches like Kevin McKenzie and Tricia Munroe here as well—former national female players—who will be able to work with the new female participants. We have stations and different programmes that they can work on, and we will be continuing this until school reopens. We are happy with this start at the moment,” Gonsalves added.
The programme will run every weekend until schools reopen after the Easter holiday break.
