School outreach, family adventures, fireside storytelling and environmental clean-ups will be held across Region Ten in November under a new tourism initiative linking bauxite heritage to blue lakes and rivers.
The Region Ten Tourism Committee has launched Tourism Awareness Month under the theme "Tourism is Everybody's Business", unveiling its 'Bauxite to Blue' initiative.
The school outreach will cover secondary schools across the region, with plans to establish tourism clubs to encourage young people's participation in the industry.
Other activities include business and stakeholder engagement and a community capacity-building programme scheduled for November 7–29. The month will conclude with an environmental clean-up exercise at the riverfront on November 29.
Committee Chairman Laurence Simon said the initiative builds on the region's historical identity and embraces new economic opportunities. It will highlight more than 100 years of bauxite mining history and promote blue lakes, rivers and other natural attractions as tourism assets.
"For Linden and Region Ten, it can strengthen community pride, support local businesses and broaden livelihoods. For Guyana, it adds a distinctive combination of mining heritage, culture and adventure to our national tourism offering," Simon said.
He said the initiative would also create opportunities for a new generation of tourism guides and storytellers, and encourage responsible tourism practices that respect the environment and local communities.
Tourism Development Officer Odessa Glasgow said the region has tremendous tourism potential but needs greater awareness and community participation to realise it.
"Tourism is everybody's business. We are reminded that tourism is not just a responsibility of the tourism sector alone," she said.
"Very proud to say that…we took our little offices in our little space and we plan ideas, we come up with initiatives, and then we set goals and set targets, and then we see it listed as events where we can execute and show off our region," Glasgow added.
The committee also plans to strengthen promotion through digital campaigns, videos, storytelling and a digital tourism directory, while developing partnerships with businesses and members of the diaspora.
