Police are investigating a suspected human trafficking case after 14 Cuban women were found during an operation in Bartica, Region Seven, on Wednesday.
The operation followed reports that a Cuban woman was allegedly being held against her will. A 33-year-old Cuban man was arrested in connection with the matter.
The women were escorted to Georgetown, where they are being screened and interviewed by the Trafficking in Persons Unit, with assistance from the Ministries of Human Services and Home Affairs.
The suspect remains in custody at Regional Police Division 4A as investigations continue.
Guyana has intensified efforts to combat human trafficking through stronger legislation, increased enforcement and expanded support for victims. The response is guided by the 2026–2030 National Action Plan, which focuses on prevention, protection, prosecution and partnerships.
The Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act 2023 provides for tougher penalties, ranging from five years to life imprisonment. Authorities have also increased training for law enforcement officers, public awareness campaigns and cooperation with regional and international partners.
The Counter-Trafficking in Persons Unit provides psychosocial support, referrals and assistance to victims and operates national reporting hotlines, including a Spanish-language line.
Guyana also maintained its Tier 1 ranking in the United States Department of State's 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report, recognising its efforts to meet international standards in combating the crime.
The Ministry of Home Affairs urges the public to stay vigilant and support national anti-trafficking efforts. Any suspected cases of human trafficking should be reported immediately to the national hotline at 227-4083, 623-5030, or 624-0079 (Spanish), or to the nearest police station.
