Prosecutors have told a Georgetown court they have sufficient evidence to charge Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed with murder over the 2021 killing of Ricardo “Paper Shorts” Fagundes.
Prosecutor Glenn Hannamon made the claim on Monday. No murder charge has been laid against Mr Mohamed in connection with the killing.
Defence Attorney Siand Dhurjon questioned the basis of the claim. He argued that police have never contacted or questioned Mr Mohamed about the killing since it happened. Mr Dhurjon also asked how the prosecution could say it holds compelling evidence when investigators had not told Mr Mohamed about it as of Monday.
The claim came during proceedings in which Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman refused an application to revoke Mr Mohamed's bail in the extradition case against him.
Fagundes was gunned down outside Palm Court on Main Street, Georgetown, in March 2021.
Separately, Mr Mohamed and Police Constable Ryan Greene are on remand. The matter involves the alleged unauthorised disclosure of surveillance footage from the Government's Safe City system in exchange for $800,000.
