The Pegasus Weekly Chess League opened its second season on Monday evening with 16 competitors at the Pegasus Hotel, alongside the launch of the Drayton's Chess Club website.
Organised by FIDE Master Anthony Drayton, the competition has retained 10 players from its inaugural season while welcoming six newcomers, four of whom are entering competitive chess for the first time.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Drayton described the new season as a demonstration of continuity and commitment, noting that the League was established to provide regular competition while fostering relationships among players from different professional and social backgrounds.
A key highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the Drayton's Chess Club website, developed by chess player Kishan Puran. The platform, promised during the inaugural season, provides a central online resource for tournament results, standings, player profiles and official announcements.
Drayton also acknowledged students attending the ceremony, encouraging them to embrace competitive chess as an avenue for personal development and future achievement.
Pegasus General Manager Carlos Montenegro was also present and delivered remarks as the competition got under way.
On the boards, Keron Sandiford, Oluwadare Oyeyipo, Martin Poon, Odinnie Nehezie Reece, Gilbert Williams, Gaven Houston, Jevaughn Grant and Joshua Gopaul each secured one point in the opening round.
Sandiford received a forfeit victory against Seth Hugh, while Oyeyipo defeated Blair Ephraim. Poon overcame Ryan Oniel McKay, and Reece defeated Jessica Callender.
Williams secured a win against Jaden Taylor, Houston prevailed over Sachin Beharry, and Grant defeated Raymond Sookdeo. Gopaul also collected a point following Owen Mickle's forfeit.
The eight winners move into the second round with one point apiece, setting up an early contest for the leading positions.
