Arif Shadeek, a 23-year-old porter, died on Monday after his lorry slipped off a roadway near a cliff along Tiger Creek Main Access Road, North West District, police said.

Shadeek, of Essequibo Coast, Region Two, was one of three people in the lorry.

Preliminary investigations show two lorries were passing each other in opposite directions around a turn near the cliff when the left wheels of Shadeek's lorry slipped off the roadway. He reportedly jumped to avoid falling with it and landed on the road with severe head injuries.

A doctor at the Pakera District Hospital pronounced him dead on arrival.

The driver and another porter in his lorry remain hospitalised at the facility, where the porter is reportedly in critical condition.

The driver and a porter of the other lorry are in police custody, assisting with investigations.
