Residents of Linden took to the streets for a second day on Tuesday to protest frequent power outages and water disruptions, with some reporting four or more blackouts per day in recent weeks.

Linden Electricity Company Inc. (LECI) said the outages stemmed from a problem at the Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Incorporated (BMGGI) power plant, adding that technicians were working to fix the issue.

The Linden Utility Services Co-operative Society Limited (LUSCSL) said its management met LECI on Monday to discuss the extensive outages over the weekend.

Linden Mayor Dominique Blair said he had been on the ground assessing the situation.

“We have called the town hall meeting about two months ago and I’m concerned. So, because of the concern of electricity in the community, we have spoken to all the facilitators for electricity… We’ve spoken to both of them. They have made some commitments. So, we’re not supposed to getting so severe blackouts,” he said.

LUSCSL Lines and Maintenance Supervisor Martin Richmond said technical issues were recently detected at Wismar and would take months to rectify.

LECI and LUSCSL have pledged a seven-day survey of the distribution system to identify and resolve potential faults.

Consumers should expect scheduled outages from 1pm to 4pm daily for seven days, starting Monday, while the work is done.

Both suppliers apologised for the inconvenience and appealed for patience.
