Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has sidestepped questions about who would lead the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party if he is extradited to the United States, expressing confidence that he will remain in Guyana and become president in 2031.

Asked at a press conference on Tuesday morning about contingency plans and a potential successor, Mohamed instead emphasised his confidence that the extradition proceedings would not force him to leave the country.

“By God’s grace, I will be here, and come 2031, I will be the president of this country to ensure that our people can live a better life,” he said.
Mohamed also touted WIN’s political strength, claiming the party enjoys support across all racial groups.

“WIN is a formidable force, a force to reckon with. The people want a change. We are the only political party … where we have support from all the races,” he said.
He told reporters that the extradition proceedings were politically motivated, arguing that he would have continued living comfortably had he not announced his political ambitions on Independence Day in 2025.

Mohamed said he entered politics after supporters urged him to contest the presidency.

He and his father are contesting extradition proceedings linked to US criminal charges, including allegations of gold-related fraud, money laundering and customs offences. Both deny the allegations.
