Businesses and consumers in Linden's central business district could soon have easier access to electronic payments, as the municipality explores a cashless zone at Central Mackenzie.
Linden Mayor Dominique Blair said discussions have begun with Republic Bank and business representatives on expanding electronic payments and banking infrastructure in the district, with possible additional ATMs.
“We want to look at digitising the central business zone. I spoke with Republic Bank – the manager. We have to call a meeting with both the chambers and also with the municipality and those businesses. We want to collaborate to have a cashless zone,” he explained during a live discussion.
Blair added that the initiative would require collaboration among the municipality, business chambers and individual businesses. The council intends to convene talks with the relevant authorities to advance it.
The proposal comes as Linden's commercial activity is expected to expand, with plans advancing for dedicated business districts at Wismar and Mackenzie. The districts are intended to bring small businesses together and provide easier access to support, training and financing.
