A doctor's finger was almost bitten off when two Rottweilers escaped a yard and attacked her and her husky in Diamond, East Bank Demerara, prompting calls for responsible dog ownership.
Dr Abena Pierre of Europa Clinic said she was walking her husky near Fort and Fifth Avenue at about 8pm when the dogs got out and attacked them.
“My finger was almost bitten off and I have been bitten behind my leg,” she said.
She said it took six men, including one with a gun, to pull the dogs off her husky, which was bitten on its back.
Dr Pierre said the attack has raised concerns about the safety of others, particularly children.
“But what if this was a child walking along that street?” she asked.
She alleged that the same dogs had previously attacked an elderly woman. She also said she asked for proof of the dogs' vaccination status but was given no documentation, and alleged that the owners denied owning the dogs when police arrived, though photographs of the dogs at the gate were available.

She has reported the matter to the police and intends to pursue it through the courts, seeking accountability from the owners.
Dog attacks in Guyana have previously proved fatal. In 2024, Ravindra Jakissoon was charged with manslaughter after his pit bulls mauled and killed Latchminen Permaul.
Under the Dogs Act, Chapter 71:05, the occupier of premises where a dog was kept or allowed to remain is presumed to be its owner and can be held liable for injury, unless the presumption is disproved.
A dog proved to have injured a person is deemed dangerous, and a magistrate may order that it be kept under proper control or destroyed if it is not properly controlled.
