Burning roadblocks, a sand truck fire and suspected gunshots are under investigation in the Buxton-Vigilance area, East Coast Demerara, after incidents on Tuesday.

Police said ranks heading to Vigilance at about 4:40pm in connection with an ongoing investigation encountered several people who had blocked access points with burning tyres, wood and other debris.

The Guyana Fire Service was summoned, but people in the area hurled debris at firefighters and continued adding combustible material to the fires.

Police then received a report that a sand truck along the Railway Embankment at Buxton had been set on fire. Ranks found the vehicle with extensive damage to its front cabin, and the Fire Service extinguished the blaze.

Police also received information that several loud explosions, suspected to be gunshots, were heard in the area shortly before the truck was found on fire.

Investigators have identified CCTV cameras in the surrounding area and will review the footage.

No arrests have been made, and police patrols remain in the area as investigations continue.
