Farmers' markets, the inaugural Farmers' Conference and the Annual Honey Fest are among activities planned for Agriculture Month 2026, which begins on Thursday.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha delivered the feature address on Wednesday at the official launch of the month-long observance, which is being held under the theme "Innovate, Nourish, Grow: Building a Strong and Sustainable Guyana".

The calendar also includes World Food Day activities and other events showcasing the sector's development. Mustapha noted that the activities will provide platforms for knowledge sharing and stronger market linkages, and will showcase the work of farmers, fisherfolk, livestock producers, agro-processors and other stakeholders.

According to Mustapha, the theme reflects the transformation taking place in the sector and the Government's focus on building a modern, productive and sustainable industry.

He pointed out that farmers are increasingly embracing science, technology, research, mechanisation, digital agriculture and climate-smart production systems.

The growing use of drones, sensors, precision irrigation and digital platforms such as the Farmers Connect app, he added, shows technology becoming integral to production and service delivery.

Mustapha also highlighted agriculture's role in ensuring Guyanese have access to safe, affordable, nutritious and reliable food, while strengthening food sovereignty and the country's leadership in regional food and nutrition security.

He added that Guyana's progress has been recognised internationally, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) identifying it as one of only four countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with a prevalence of hunger and undernourishment below 2.5 per cent.
