Reanna Ramkisson, 24, of Corentyne, died on Monday, days after the motor car in which she was travelling overturned into a trench at Auchlyne Public Road.
The accident occurred on September 14, and Ramkisson, of Lot 106 Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was trapped in the vehicle for some time before being rescued.
Police said the incident occurred around 10:20pm when motor car PYY 6384, driven by a 25-year-old man of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was travelling west along the southern drive lane of Auchlyne Public Road. A donkey ran from south to north into the vehicle's path, prompting the driver to swerve to avoid it. He lost control, and the car overturned in a trench on the northern side of the road.
Ramkisson, seated in the front passenger seat, became trapped, while the driver escaped. Residents rushed to the scene and launched a rescue effort, with several reportedly using a hammer to break the vehicle's windows to free her.
She was pulled from the wreck and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where she was treated for fluid in her lungs. She was discharged around 11am on September 15, but was readmitted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital around 2pm the same day after complaining of feeling unwell, and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit. Police had said at the time that her condition was stable.
The driver, reportedly identified as Ramkisson's partner, is in police custody as investigations continue.
Videos circulating from the scene showed residents attempting to rescue Ramkisson, with tensions rising as some confronted the driver over her condition.
Police canvassed the area for CCTV footage, but none was located. Investigations are ongoing.
