A Police Inspector has been placed under close arrest after allegedly opening fire on a minibus driver following a roadside argument along the Buxton Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, leaving the man with gunshot wounds to his chest and left leg.
The Inspector, 46, attached to the Tactical Services Unit, is assisting police in Regional Division #4 ‘C’ and the Office of Professional Responsibility with an investigation into the incident, which occurred on Friday. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 48-year-old man of Buxton was driving a minibus along the embankment when an encounter occurred between him and the Inspector, who was driving a motor car. An argument subsequently ensued between the two men, and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
During the incident, the Inspector reportedly discharged several rounds from his service firearm, striking the minibus driver.
The injured man was taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor on duty and admitted as a patient. His condition is listed as serious but stable.
The Inspector subsequently reported the matter to police and handed over his service firearm, a 9mm Glock 19 pistol, along with 13 live rounds of ammunition. Both have been lodged pending examination.
A third motor vehicle, which was in the vicinity at the time, was also reportedly struck during the incident. That vehicle, along with those driven by the two men, was examined as part of the investigation.
Police said CCTV cameras were identified in the area and efforts are being made to obtain the relevant footage.
Investigations are ongoing.
