Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has introduced advanced screening technology to strengthen security checks while making the screening process smoother and more efficient for passengers and staff.
Systems Administrator Anand Hamilton explained that the airport has employed new full-body scanners and other advanced screening equipment which will enhance security while promoting greater accountability and transparency.
Hamilton said the new equipment is part of the airport’s efforts to meet international security requirements for persons and items entering restricted areas.
“We have installed some new scanners…the L3 Provision 3 scanner; this is the body scanner. As part of our requirements, and to meet international policies, we have to screen persons that are entering into a restricted area,” he explained.
Hamilton noted that another scanner is used to examine small baggage and parcels before they enter restricted areas, with operators trained to identify potential security concerns.
According to Hamilton, the new equipment is designed to detect anomalies in baggage and parcels, allowing suspicious items to be rejected before they enter secured areas.
The airport has also installed additional modern scanners to screen items entering through other access points, including equipment used to examine materials coming into the terminal.
Hamilton said operators will be looking for “any anomalies, guns, contraband, etc.” as part of the enhanced security checks.
The new screening systems are now fully operational at CJIA.
