The 2026 Guyana Folk Festival Season officially opens today in Brooklyn, New York, launching a week-long celebration of Guyanese heritage.
Under the theme “Roots, Rhythms & Harmony Celebrating Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee,” the festival runs through September 6 and is organised by the Guyana Cultural Association of New York (GCA).
The annual festival provides a vibrant platform for Guyanese culture, bringing together members of the diaspora to celebrate and preserve traditions through music, dance, storytelling and community activities.
The association’s programmes include activities such as Recognition Awards and Prizes, Summer Heritage Workshops, Family Fun Day and Kwe Kwe Nite. These initiatives are designed to engage different generations of the Guyanese diaspora and provide opportunities to experience and pass on cultural traditions.
The Folk Festival Season forms part of a broader year-round effort to document, celebrate and promote Guyana’s diverse cultural heritage while strengthening connections between Guyanese at home and abroad.
The festival’s first event will be held at noon today with “Musical Exchange: The Guyanese Experience”. It will open at the Lefferts Historic House Museum at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
