Ganesh Harnaraine, 17, of Bush Lot, Essequibo Coast, has emerged with 13 Grade Ones, 11 Grade Twos and two Grade Threes across 26 subjects, achieving the results while grieving the loss of his father.
His father, Ramnaraine Harnaraine, died while Ganesh was preparing for the examinations, leaving him to study without the man who had witnessed his long nights of work and early mornings of preparation.
He told Ignite News that instead of allowing grief to break him, he made a decision that would change the course of his journey: he decided to work harder.
He explained that his father’s passing became a source of motivation. Ganesh said he promised himself he would keep pushing forward and make his family proud, noting that in the midst of his grief, he took on even more subjects and committed himself to achieving excellence.
He recalled countless nights of studying late and mornings spent preparing for school, adding that he sacrificed his social life and, for five months, gave up social media entirely to remain focused on his studies.
For Ganesh, he stressed, the results mean far more than grades on a report card. He said they represent the countless sacrifices he made and the support of his family, friends and teachers. Most importantly, he added, they represent a young man who refused to allow the loss of his father to become the end of his dreams.
“I turned my pain into purpose,” he told Ignite News.
Ganesh credited his mother, Priya Sasepaul, his aunt, family, friends and teachers for standing by him through one of the most difficult periods of his life, noting that they continued to believe in him even when he struggled to believe in himself.
He explained that his ambition is to pursue a career in engineering while also developing himself as an entrepreneur, adding that he hopes to contribute meaningfully to Guyana’s development and eventually create opportunities for others.
His next goal, he said, is to pursue CAPE, followed by studies at the University of Guyana.
Although his father was not physically present to celebrate the achievement with him, Ganesh said he has turned his success into a tribute to the love, lessons and memories his father left behind.
