Farmers with proof of land ownership in Nabaclis and surrounding East Coast Demerara communities will be eligible for up to five acres of land clearing, with work expected to begin within two weeks, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has announced.

The announcement came as Mustapha met residents and farmers in the area, engaging them on concerns affecting agriculture, community development and access to Government support.

Building on that commitment, Mustapha said the Ministry will also move to revitalise farmers’ groups in the area, ensuring broad representation and greater involvement in advancing farmers’ interests.

Turning to infrastructure, he said progress has been made on plans to establish kokers in the area, with the design currently being finalised. The project is estimated at approximately $30 million and will proceed to tender once the design is complete.

Beyond agriculture, Mustapha also committed to raising residents’ concerns about the development of community playgrounds with the ministers responsible for culture, youth and sport.

Addressing the wider gathering, Mustapha reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with every community and group, regardless of race or political affiliation, and emphasised agriculture’s continued role in Guyana’s economic development.

In that context, he said the Government’s objective is to position Guyana as the region’s premier food producer by increasing production of livestock, fruits and vegetables, while contributing to efforts to reduce CARICOM’s food import bill.

“We have to move away from race and politics if we are to move forward and develop this country. I am prepared to work with you. I want to work with you, and I want to challenge you,” Mustapha said.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony and other government officials were also present.
