A trip to buy two beers ended in tragedy for Asmat Mohamed Hussain, a 55-year-old Corriverton fisherman who died Wednesday from stab injures near Dukestown supermarket.
The incident occurred at about 9pm at Dukestown, Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice, according to police, who added that a 15-year-old male student of mixed ancestry, residing at No. 77 Housing Scheme, Corriverton, is alleged to have committed the offence. The teenager is in police custody and is assisting with the investigation.
Hussain’s sister, Bibi Gewan, recalled that several relatives were outside near the supermarket when the incident occurred. Her brother had gone in to buy two beers and was returning when people suddenly began running.
“They was at the culvert sit down there and he go in the shop to buy two beer. And he coming out. And all of what they see, people start to run,” she recalled.
The relatives followed the crowd and found Hussain lying on the ground with a large amount of blood nearby. Gewan’s husband was alerted and went to the scene, after which another brother and her nephew helped take Hussain to the hospital.
“He was unconscious and he never recovered,” she added.
The family remains uncertain about what led to the incident, unable to confirm whether an argument had occurred beforehand.
“I don’t know what goes wrong there. I don’t know. I don’t know. I can’t say what goes wrong there. If they had arguments or what, I don’t know,” Gewan explained.
She remembered her brother as kind, loving and friendly, and not known to be violent or prone to fighting.
“He’s a very kind person, loving. He’s never a fighting person or anything. He’s very friendly,” she reflected.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
