Guyana is poised to cross a major oil-production milestone by year-end, with ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge projecting output of more than one million barrels per day.
Routledge made the disclosure at the launch of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo 2027 at the Plaza Court Hotel in Georgetown on Tuesday.
He said Guyana may have already surpassed one billion barrels of cumulative production, describing the achievement as unprecedented for an offshore development at this pace.
“We anticipate by the end of this year that Guyana will push beyond the frontier of a million barrels per day production. Quite a remarkable story in the world. And indeed, another milestone that we’re about to push past, indeed, depending on how you count the barrels, we may already have surpassed a billion barrels of production in Guyana. The first billion barrels,” Routledge disclosed.
“Quite a feat in such a short space of time and truly pushing beyond frontiers that in any other deep water or even offshore location has never been achieved at this pace with the same safety record and protection of the environment,” he added.
Routledge also highlighted the growing role of Guyanese businesses in the sector, noting that more than 2,000 vendors and suppliers have participated in the industry, while companies have collectively spent more than US$3.6 billion with local firms.
Head of the Local Content Secretariat Michael Monroe, speaking on behalf of Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat, said the country’s energy story must ultimately be measured by what it delivers beyond oil production.
“The choices we make now about how we invest, how we govern, how we share the benefits of this moment, will determine whether this era is one of extraction or one of transformation,” Monroe said.
He stressed that oil revenues must support infrastructure, education, healthcare and resilience while Guyana diversifies its economy and avoids overdependence on petroleum.
Meanwhile, Routledge identified gas as the next major frontier, pointing to the ongoing development of gas-to-energy infrastructure and opportunities to expand gas use into Berbice.
Next year’s conference will be hosted under the theme, “Beyond Frontiers: Guyana’s Energy Story.”
