Attorney General Anil Nandlall is urging parents and guardians to ensure funds from the state-funded Because We Care cash grant are used to support their children’s education, as nationwide distribution of the programme continues.
Speaking during his “Issues in the News” programme on Tuesday, Nandlall said that the grant is intended to assist with school expenses, easing the burden on families’ educational costs.
“The annual grant is intended to assist with expenses arising from or in connection with the children’s education over the course of the academic year,” he said.
He said that while recipients ultimately decide what is required for the child, the expenses must relate to their educational needs.
“This grant is not intended for you to go and buy a stereo system at Courts or TV system or for any purpose other than your children’s educational expenditures,” Nandlall said.
The Because We Care cash grant is a government-funded education initiative that provides direct financial support to every child registered in public and private schools.
It covers a cash grant, uniform and supplies, and a transportation grant, giving each child $85,000 for the academic year.
