Single-parent households, elderly residents and persons living with disabilities are among those receiving special attention as the government responds to powerful winds that swept through Region Two on Wednesday, damaging homes, schools, public buildings and other infrastructure.
President Irfaan Ali visited storm-battered communities in the region, where authorities have recorded more than 120 incidents.
Accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Madanlall Ramraj, regional officials, and members of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Ali conducted on-the-ground assessments and met with affected residents.
The President described the winds as feeling “like a hurricane,” with damage reported across several communities. Among the sites inspected were the Anna Regina Stadium, where a section of the blue stand was ripped apart, and the Anna Regina Police Station, where a concrete wall was affected.
Ali expressed concern over an incident at Riverstown Primary School, where a teacher was injured after part of the roof structure collapsed.
He said repairs would begin immediately to allow students to return to a safe learning environment as soon as possible.
More than 120 tarpaulins have been distributed to affected households, while Minister Ramraj is leading efforts to distribute zinc sheets and other roofing materials to families whose roofs were completely destroyed.
Work crews have also been mobilised to assist with emergency repairs.
Contractors have been tasked with carrying out urgent repairs to the Anna Regina Stadium, with the President expressing confidence that significant progress would be made by Friday and Saturday.
Army personnel and CDC teams worked through the night helping residents remove debris, secure properties and arrange accommodation where necessary.
“We understand the challenges facing families at this time, and we will continue to work alongside residents to ensure that every affected community recovers quickly,” Ali said.
Assessments are ongoing as authorities continue coordinating relief operations across the region.
