The fight against chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) was brought into focus Saturday as the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Stride 592, hosted a wellness walk to mark Caribbean Wellness Day 2026.

Held under the theme “Our Mind, Our Body, Our Wellness,” the event sought to encourage healthier lifestyles and raise awareness of the prevention of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory conditions.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, said Caribbean Wellness Day provides an important opportunity to remind Guyanese that many NCDs can be prevented or their onset delayed through healthier lifestyle choices.

He encouraged citizens to make regular physical activity and healthier eating part of their daily routines, stressing that wellness should extend beyond commemorative events and become a long-term commitment.

The walk began at the Guyana Friendship Park in Region Three, with scores of participants making their way across the park and back.

Representatives from the Pan-American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation offices, CARICOM, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Guyana Defence Force and other organisations joined the activity. Nutrition booths also provided information on healthy eating, with healthy snacks and beverages available.

Caribbean Wellness Day is observed annually across the region to promote healthy living and encourage individuals, families and communities to take action to improve their physical and mental well-being.
