Heavy rainfall over the past few days continues to trigger severe flooding across several Region Ten communities, including Kwakwani, Coomacka, and Linden.
According to Vice Chairman Mark Goring, rising water levels have inundated parts of the Kwakwani community, with Waterfront, Lamp Island, and Jeep Landing among the worst-affected areas.
He said the flooding has also impacted commercial activity in Linden, with shops and stalls in the Mackenzie Market underwater.
Goring has since called for dredging of the Berbice and Demerara rivers.
He called for immediate intervention from the Civil Defence Commission and other relevant authorities to evaluate the extent of the flooding and provide emergency assistance to affected residents and business operators.
He has also urged residents and business owners to take precautionary measures, including relocating valuables to higher ground where possible.
In addition to the flooding, residents of Sub-Region Two are facing mounting difficulties due to the poor condition of the Ituni/Kwakwani trail, which serves as a critical transportation link.
Goring noted that the Aroaima trail is in an even worse state.
The Vice Chairman said the deteriorating road conditions have reportedly resulted in transportation fares increasing by $1,000.
He is urging relevant agencies to undertake urgent rehabilitation works and implement a long-term maintenance plan to improve the condition of the trails and ensure reliable access for residents.
“The current state of these critical access roads is unacceptable and directly impacts livelihoods, access to essential services, and economic activity in Sub-Region Two,” Goring said.
