Education Minister Sonia Parag visited the family of Dolphin Secondary School teacher Tineka Hicks to offer comfort, after Hicks died this morning in an accident on the Diamond Bypass Road, East Bank Demerara, while heading to work.
The accident also left two students severely injured. The driver of the Route 42 minibus involved is in police custody as investigations continue.
The Ministry of Education extended condolences to Hicks’ family, colleagues and students in a statement. “Minister Parag and the entire Ministry of Education family extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Ms Hicks’s loved ones, her colleagues, and her students. Her dedication to her classroom and the lives she touched will not be forgotten,” the ministry said.
Hicks was remembered at Dolphin Secondary School as a dedicated teacher who positively impacted the lives of many students, and her death has shaken the school community.
The school’s management and staff said in a separate statement that they were deeply saddened by the loss. “Tineka was a valued member of our school family whose presence, dedication, and contributions will be greatly missed by students, staff, and all who had the privilege of knowing her,” the school said, adding that Hicks’ family and loved ones remained in their thoughts and prayers.
Police investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing.
