With a date for Local Government Elections still to be announced, Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton, believes the party has a unique advantage to perform well at the upcoming polls, as citizens are increasingly interested in local-level representation.
The party leader said he expects a high turnout at the elections, as citizens are eager to understand how they benefit from the country’s increasing oil wealth.
“I believe we are in a better position now where people are beginning to understand the importance of local government elections. While we did not have the turnout at national elections, I anticipate that there will be more people involved, wanting to determine what happens at the local level,” Norton said.
He said the party continues its call for biometrics and a clean voters’ list and will re-examine approaches to ensure its demands are met. In the meantime, it has continued preparations for the 2026 polls, he added.
“We are preparing. We believe that once we do the work, we are going to do well in the local government elections. So our focus is on putting up our candidates, putting our message out there, engaging the people and ensuring that we mobilise the support needed to be successful at the local government elections.”
Local Government Elections are legally held every three years, with 2026 set for the next cycle. The responsible ministry announces a date, triggering a response from the Guyana Elections Commission to facilitate voting.
