Regional energy company InterEnergy has officially launched operations in Guyana and announced a partnership with Guyana Power and Light (GPL) aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure and supporting future energy demand.
The company on Thursday opened its local office at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre, with government officials, diplomats and private sector representatives in attendance.
Speaking at the launch, InterEnergy Country Manager Freddy Acosta said Guyana’s rapid economic growth makes reliable electricity critical to sustaining development.
“Guyana stands at a defining moment in history—a moment where opportunity, growth and transformation converge,” Acosta said.
He noted that while the country continues to expand, its energy infrastructure faces challenges, including ageing assets, service interruptions and operational inefficiencies.
“The speed of development will be determined by the strength of the energy system,” he added.
Through its partnership with GPL, InterEnergy will focus on three key areas: strengthening grid infrastructure, optimising power generation assets, and developing a smart grid roadmap through 2030.
According to Acosta, the company will help assess the performance of existing power plants, extend the lifespan of viable assets and identify equipment that should be replaced.
“This means improving current operations, extending the possible asset life, or replacement of those assets that are no longer in good use,” he explained.
The initiative will also support the modernisation of the electricity network through advanced substations, automation systems, renewable energy integration and digital technologies designed to improve efficiency and reliability.
Acosta said Guyana has an opportunity to bypass traditional stages of power sector development and move directly to a modern electricity system.
“Guyana doesn’t need to follow a traditional path. It can leapfrog into a modern 21st-century grid—reliable, efficient, digitally managed, resilient and renewable-ready,” he said.
InterEnergy, which operates across 10 countries and manages more than 2.5 gigawatts of installed generation capacity, said it intends to bring its regional experience to Guyana as electricity demand continues to rise.
“The objective is to advise GPL and the Government of Guyana on what steps need to be taken to reach those objectives that we share,” Acosta said.
He added that the company’s long-term vision is to help create a power system capable of supporting the country’s economic transformation.
“Together, they transform the system into something intelligent, something responsive, something future-ready,” Acosta stated.
