The government has awarded a $1.519 billion contract to replace the Pouderoyen Market with a larger, two-storey facility.
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand turned the sod for the project on Saturday.
The new market is expected to accommodate the existing 78 registered vendors, people currently selling along the roadway and new entrepreneurs.
Construction will be undertaken by Kalitech Incorporated and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The facility was designed by Skylines Architecture Incorporated.
The contract was awarded through a public tender process, according to the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
Manickchand said the project is intended to expand business opportunities and provide residents with a modern facility for shopping and vending.
She also suggested that the market’s location could attract customers from the East Bank of Demerara, increasing commercial activity in Pouderoyen and surrounding communities.
“Once this is up and running, you’re going to see Region Four people from the East Bank coming right here to shop,” the minister said.
The project forms part of a wider programme of market upgrades across Region Three. Government officials also met vendors at the project site and responded to questions about the development.
