Customers across Demerara and Berbice were left without electricity for several hours today following what the Guyana Power and Light described as a system disturbance.

The outage began at approximately 9:30 a.m., affecting several communities across the interconnected system.

In an update issued around 2 p.m., GPL said all affected customers in Georgetown, the East Coast of Demerara and West Demerara had been repowered.

However, some customers in Georgetown continued to report outages after that announcement.

The company said sections of the East Bank of Demerara and Berbice also remained without electricity, as its technical teams continued restoration work.

Today’s disruption follows several recent outages across the interconnected system.

GPL recently acknowledged that rising electricity demand and overloaded sections of its distribution network were contributing to interruptions. Peak demand has climbed to approximately 257 megawatts, while available generation stood at about 265.6 megawatts,leaving the system with a narrow reserve if a generator or another major component fails. The company has not yet disclosed what caused today’s system disturbance.
