Soldier injured in hostile fire from Venezuelan shore

A member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was injured on Friday after a border patrol came under fire along the Cuyuni River in Region Seven.
In a statement, the GDF said the incident occurred at approximately 12:03 hrs while ranks were escorting civilian commuters in keeping with established operational procedures.
According to preliminary reports, the patrol came under hostile fire from the Venezuelan shore and responded in accordance with operational protocols while ensuring the safe passage of civilians.
The injured rank was administered first aid before being medically evacuated to Georgetown for further treatment. The GDF said the officer is in a stable condition and that family members have been informed.
The force said it continues to maintain an active operational presence along Guyana’s western border and remains committed to protecting border communities and safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
