Some 60 fighters are expected to compete in the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) latest Development Tournament on Saturday, said national coach Lennox Daniels.

The tournament, set for the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue from 5 p.m., will feature boxers from gyms across Guyana as part of the GBA’s grassroots development programme.

Daniels said the strong participation reflects increasing interest in the sport and growing involvement from boxing gyms nationwide.

“So far, we are looking at almost 60 boxers for Saturday’s tournament, and that number itself tells a story,” Daniels said ahead of the event.

Among the gyms expected to participate are the Andrew “Six Head” Lewis Gym, Pace and Power Boxing Gym, Rose Hall Jammers, New Amsterdam Boxing Academy, Police Boxing Gym and Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym.

Daniels described the Development Tournament as a key component of the country’s boxing structure, providing young fighters with valuable competitive experience while allowing coaches and selectors to identify emerging talent.

“You cannot develop a boxer without competition, and what the GBA has been doing through these developmental cards is creating the perfect environment for growth,” he said.

He also praised the association for establishing a structured pathway for young athletes to progress from grassroots competition to national and international levels.

According to the GBA, the increasing number of participants has prompted organisers to stage events at larger venues such as the National Gymnasium.

Recent tournaments have produced strong performances from several gyms across the country, helping to strengthen the national programme and widen the pool of talent available for selection.
