Two teachers attached to the David Rose Special Education Needs School in Georgetown have been sent on administrative leave after a video appeared online showing students at the school being abused.
Education Minister Sonia Parag, in a statement, said she was “deeply disturbed and hurt” by the footage, which allegedly showed acts of abuse against students at the institution.
The teachers seen in the video were sent on leave pending a “full and impartial investigation,” expected to be completed by June 1, she said in the statement.
“No child should ever be subjected to such treatment, particularly within a school environment entrusted with their care, development and protection,” Parag said.
She said the Ministry of Education would use “the fullest extent of its authority and resources” to address the matter and would not tolerate abuse against children with special educational needs or any child within the school system.
Parag also acknowledged the “distress, hurt and anger” caused to parents and families by the incident, noting that parents place significant trust in the education system when sending their children to school.
As part of the ministry’s response, Parag said a Board of Governors would be established for the school, with parent representation included to strengthen oversight and accountability.
The Ministry of Education said it remains committed to ensuring all children within the education system are protected and treated with dignity.
