Patriotic pride filled the Anna Regina Car Park on Monday morning as residents from across Region Two gathered to celebrate Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary during a ceremonial flag-raising exercise marked by culture, unity and reflection.
The programme featured patriotic songs, calypso renditions, dances and spoken-word presentations highlighting Guyana’s journey since Independence and its emergence as one of the region’s fastest-transforming nations.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, who delivered the feature address, said development under the administration of President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo is reaching communities across the country through investments in infrastructure, housing, healthcare, education and public services.
Ramraj noted that citizens, particularly those in hinterland and Indigenous communities, are benefitting from improved access to services and opportunities. He also pointed to government scholarship programmes that have enabled students from Regions One, Seven and Ten to pursue higher education and build brighter futures.
He said increased business activity, housing expansion and agricultural investment are positioning Guyana as a major contributor to Caribbean food security.
Regional Chairman Devin Mohan described the country’s 60th Independence milestone as a reflection of the sacrifices made by past generations in securing freedom and sovereignty.
He urged citizens to continue embracing unity and national pride while supporting efforts to strengthen communities and advance national development.
Mohan also highlighted ongoing transformation across Region Two, including road upgrades, drainage and irrigation works, expanded healthcare services, new schools, housing developments and sports facilities, along with increased opportunities for farmers, fisherfolk, entrepreneurs and youths.
Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit, who delivered the welcoming remarks, called for continued co-operation and togetherness in advancing the region.
The ceremony concluded with the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead and a parade by members of the Joint Services.
