On this momentous occasion of Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) joins the nation and its diaspora in joyful celebration of six decades of sovereignty, resilience, and the enduring promise of a united Guyanese people.

Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee is not only a celebration of independence, but also a reflection on the collective journey, sacrifices, resilience, and contributions of the many peoples who have shaped this nation over the past sixty years.

From our Indigenous heritage to the descendants of Africans, East Indians, Portuguese, Chinese, Europeans, and others who journeyed to these shores, Guyana’s story has always been one of diversity, perseverance, and shared nationhood.

Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary represents far more than the passage of time since attaining independence in 1966. It is a reflection of the remarkable journey of a people and nation that have overcome challenges, preserved democracy,

strengthened institutions, expanded opportunities, and transformed the country from a largely traditional agricultural economy into one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

As Guyana continues to emerge on the global stage through developments in oil and gas, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, tourism and education, our Independence milestone also reflects the collective aspirations, resilience and shared progress of a people continuing to advance in tolerance, understanding, unity and prosperity.

The nation has also made meaningful strides in fostering greater inclusion and coexistence among its people. While our history has not been without periods of ethnic division and tension, Guyana today continues to demonstrate the capacity of its people to rise above differences, strengthen social harmony, and embrace the shared values and aspirations that unite us as one nation.

As Guyana celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, the ERC encourages all citizens to continue embracing the values of unity, tolerance, patriotism and collective responsibility.

The safeguarding and continued strengthening of the gains made in promoting harmony, mutual respect and social cohesion remain essential to the advancement of a peaceful, inclusive and prosperous Guyana for present and future generations.
Happy 60th Independence Anniversary!
