MACORP opens US$35 million headquarters at Covent Garden

MACORP on Thursday inaugurated its US$35 million headquarters at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, marking one of the largest private-sector investments linked to Guyana’s rapid economic expansion.

The facility, years in development, was constructed over nearly two million hours of injury-free labour and is designed as a combined administrative and technical training hub rather than a conventional corporate office.

It includes specialised classrooms for hydraulics, electrical and electronic systems, equipment simulators, and self-directed learning spaces staffed by internationally certified instructors.

The centre will support MACORP’s Technical Career Path programme, aimed at training young graduates from vocational institutions into certified equipment specialists.

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, speaking on behalf of President Irfaan Ali, said the investment signals strong private-sector confidence in Guyana’s economy and underscores the need for workforce development alongside infrastructure expansion.

He urged greater investment in apprenticeships, internships, and technical training, warning that a shortage of skilled personnel could undermine productivity in a fast-growing economy.

“Every heavy-duty machine is only as effective as the technicians, engineers, mechanics, and operators behind it,” Edghill said, adding that equipment breakdowns can significantly disrupt major projects and increase costs.

He also called for stronger after-sales support, improved local technical capacity, and faster access to spare parts to reduce downtime and keep projects on schedule and within budget.

MACORP President and General Manager German Consuegra said the facility reflects long-term confidence in Guyana’s development trajectory and is intended to strengthen customer support and technical capability.

“Very few countries in the world possess this level of momentum, optimism, and transformation that exists here,” he said, describing the investment as a long-term commitment to the market.

Vice President for Distribution Latin America at Caterpillar Inc., Pablo de la Iglesia, said the investment reflected strong confidence in the local economy and industrial sector.

More than 1,400 workers contributed to the project, including multiple international teams and local subcontractors, among them women-led small and medium-sized enterprises.

Engineering firm HMP Engineers was also involved in project delivery.
Other officials attending the commissioning included Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Mandalll Ramraj, United States Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot, and senior government and private-sector representatives.
